“FAST AND FURIOUS”: WHEN PAUL WALKER FIGHTED TO GET TYRESE GIBSON BACK AS ROMAN

According to “Screenrant,” Tyrese Gibson shared details about how Paul Walker struggled to bring his character, Roman Pearce, back to the “Fast & Furious” franchise with “Fast Five.” Gibson’s character first appeared in “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003) alongside Walker and Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, another mainstay of the franchise.

Roman was introduced as a childhood friend of Brian O’Conner from Walker, who had a past stealing cars. In the movie, Roman and O’Conner teamed up to take down a drug dealer named Carter Verone. Although the character was well received, the franchise saw fit to move on without Gibson for a while.

The next two installments, “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” and “Fast & Furious,” did not include Gibson’s Roman. After “Fast & Furious,” the franchise made a shift in focus to the story as it moved away from racing and leaned more into mass action movie territory, which began with Fast Five.

However, when the creative team put together the fifth installment, there were still no plans for Roman to return. This is why Paul Walker fought to bring the character of Tyrese Gibson back to the franchise.

On EW’s Binge podcast, Tyrese Gibson talked about how Walker worked to bring Roman back for the fifth movie. The 42-year-old actor claimed it “was a fight” and detailed the tension with the studio about how Roman would fit into the franchise going forward.

“Paul knew there was a small hurdle that we had to overcome in order for all of us to come together for Fast Five. I mean, I get emotional when I think of this guy; For almost three movies, he kept begging and pleading and trying to talk to the studio and the directors and Vin, ‘Hey, we have to get Tyrese back.’ I finally came back for Five, and it was a fight, man, “he said.

Tyrese Gibson also pointed out that things only changed because Walker was backing him. After sitting down with Vin Diesel, the actor convinced them that he would be an asset to the franchise.

“I think there was some kind of spoken but not expressed tension in Roman Pearce and his surroundings, and where do I fit in? And I think after hanging out with a Vin a few times before we did Five, he quickly realized that I’m more valuable, and there are so many more perks in what I’m bringing to the franchise, since I don’t even remotely know. consider competition or anything that someone should be concerned about, “he added.

While it’s hard to imagine the franchise without Roman, the world has Paul Walker to thank for securing his spot with Dom’s crew. It should be noted that “Fast & Furious 10” is already in the works and Gibson’s Roman is likely to return. .
