New Jersey, a state of corruption and where the mafia is a latent cancer today, is the scene of Jersey Boys Chasing the Music (Jersey Boys). It is 1951 when the film starts and it soon becomes clear that to leave the neighborhood there are only 3 options:
- Join the army
- Climb in the mafia
- Become a star
For the protagonists, there are really only 2 and they opt for the one that involves money, fame, music and spotlights. They are 4 young people, some with criminal pasts, reunited to form the band The Four Seasons, in heyday during the 60s and responsible for songs like “Sherry, My Eyes Adored You” or “Big Girls Don’t Cry”. But beware, because this is a biopic > and not a musical like Mama Mia !, Chicago or The Phantom of the Opera.
It also highlights the name of the director: Clint Eastwood. Some may miss the fact that the “man with no name” is a music lover and composer of the soundtrack from his filmography, so a musical project, although novel, does not start from nowhere.
Jersey Boys Chasing the Music is based on the musical by Broadway winner of 4 Tony Awards. In honor of him, the narration starts from the breaking of the 4th wall; in the play Frankie Valli, Tommy DeVito, Nick Massi and Bob Gaudio narrate the events from their perspective. With this simple tactic and true to the theatrical roots of the material, Eastwood brings the essence of the stage to the big screen.
Except for the foray of Vincent Piazza as guitarist Tommy DeVito, the rest of the members of The Four Seasons were part of the cast of the work. Tony winner John Lloyd Young (with a prodigious vocal performance) returns as vocalist Frankie Valli; Michael Lomenda as bassist Nick Massi and Erich Bergen as composer Bob Gaudio.
Surprisingly, the film does not focus on the musical question. There are even long periods of time when your hits fade, a factor that inevitably affects the pace. Instead, it focuses on the success of the quartet, the personal conflicts that fueled their relationship, and their link to the mob, played by Christopher Walken, Frankie’s protector: Gyp DeCarlo.
But just as it happened in J. Edgar, Eastwood’s eagerness to tell everything makes him lose the threads of driving, despite the fact that he has memorable scenes where he elegantly reveals his protagonists emotionally speaking. It gets him to tie with them, but does not give them the depth that he achieved in Mystical river (Mystic river) O Gran Torino. Several disappear and reappear contentillo, causing gaps in the script, mainly in the family and personal line, but even more in the historical context.
What was going on in the world while these Jersey Boys were chasing music? Do not touch. For this reason, it is difficult to keep track of the passage of time, since the characters do not age in time. When they do it is late and the makeup is not to the point. Still, the film is a delight for the pupil and the ear, where even Joe Pesci is involved.
