Naked and Afraid is having its Game of Thrones coffee cup moment. Last night (August 10) on the Discovery series, after meeting contestants Lynsey and Darvil, Naked and Afraid viewers also met an unannounced visitor on the show. Although the pair were meant to be alone, audiences were quick to spot a person in the background during one shot who appeared to be carrying a rifle.
This person — who was both fully clothed and clearly unafraid, thanks to the rifle — was most likely associated with the production. But that didn’t stop the Naked and Afraid viewers from making some wild guesses and having a little fun with the production gaffe.
“I just started to hate #NakedAndAfraid,” one viewer wrote, sharing an image of the unidentified person on the show. “What’s up with this? You have to tell Security to stay out the shot. And all these people act scared to death on the show. Why when they have somebody with a rifle? #scripted #fake #StupidShow.”
But other Naked and Afraid viewers felt differently. Some folks found it necessary to have a rifle and gunman nearby for safety reasons, with others suggesting they were shocked a huge animal incident hadn’t happened thus far on the series.
“I for one have always assumed there was a sharp shooter nearby,” another Twitter user fired back. “That certainly doesn’t guarantee safety, but should help the players get some sleep and/or peace of mind. I can’t believe anyone would believe folks are put out there with NO protection.”
While it may not be as bad as The Mandalorian‘s jeans blunder or the aforementioned Game of Thrones coffee cup mistake, this little detail may have thrown off an element of suspense in Naked and Afraid. Baboons and hyenas had both of the players frightened on last night’s episode — they’d probably feel a little different, knowing there may be a sharp-shooter around.
Naked and Afraid airs Sunday nights on Discovery at 8/7c.
