13.40 / Paramount Network

The Gift. USA, 2000 (107 minutes). Director: Sam Raimi. Performers: Cate Blanchett, Giovanni Ribisi, Keanu Reeves, Katie Holmes.

The baffling Sam Raimi, before indulging in Spiderman’s arachnid excesses, delivered one of the most disturbing terrifying dramas of recent years. A film shaken by bursts of intense tension, in which a woman with telepathic powers carries the inner ghosts of the inhabitants of an entire town.

14.20 / AMC

‘Life is Beautiful’

Life is Beautiful. Italy, 1997 (108 minutes). Director: Roberto Benigni. Interpretes: Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi, Giustino Durano.

Still surprising is this magical dramatic comedy, in which Benigni takes up the best of his previous works and smoothes out his most obvious flaws. It is true that Benigni’s continued presence as an actor marks the story for better and for worse, but the filmmaker shows admirable courage and an overwhelming handling of comic resources. A vitalist and crazy Jew falls in love with the woman of his dreams amid the rigors of the Mussolini era. Later, faced with the Nazi occupation, he will have to use all his imagination to protect his own. And it is then that the film is revealed as a fable about the overcoming and the power of the imagination in the best Chaplinian tradition.

14.45 / TCM

‘Secrets and Lies’

Secrets and Lies. United Kingdom, 1995 (140 minutes). Director: Mike Leigh. Performers: Timothy Spall, Brenda Blethyn, Phyllis Logan.

The British Mike Leigh for years has regularly delivered aggressive, terrible films, in which he portrays the miseries of the society of his time. Secrets and Lies infiltrates the insides of a family to break down their relationships, and does so by achieving the most complex thing: that the viewer is almost one more character in the show, wallowed by the proximity of the conflicts, that what happens before his eyes is the life itself and make its meticulous dramatic reconstruction invisible. Secrets and lies is an unsettling, very hard, essential work

15.00 / Movistar CineÑ

‘Fort Apache’

Spain, 2007 (105 minutes). Director: Jaume Mateu Adrover. Int .: Juan Diego, Pep Tosar, Hamza El Hilali.

Jaume Mateu makes his debut with this energetic drama that revolves around the guardianship centers for minors. Between the docudrama and the social chronicle, filmed in super 16 millimeters and then “swollen” digitally, Fort Apache it delves into the lack of resources of educators to serve underprivileged children and forces the viewer to look at an everyday and truthful reality.

17.05 / COSMO

‘Hugo’s invention’

USA, 2011 (125 minutes). Director: Martin Scorsese. Performers: Asa Butterfield, Chloë Grace Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ray Winstone.

Reality and fantasy. Life and cinema. Territories that can sometimes be confused. Hugo’s invention follows an orphan boy who lives in the Montparnasse station, in Paris, and who turns to the creation of a robot, an imitation of human life. When cinema becomes present, it will do so in the form of a vital certainty or, perhaps, an imagined dream, with the presence of the greatest pioneer of the image, the man who took a rocket to one of the eyes of the Moon. A true wonder.

17.25 / Movistar Drama

‘J. Edgar ‘

USA, 2011 (137 minutes). Director: Clint Eastwood. Performers: Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts.

Clint Eastwood delivers an elaborate biopic centering on the all-powerful head of the FBI. Although at the time the portrait of the protagonist’s homosexuality caused controversy, this is just one more line that defines a character as contradictory as he is attractive. Eastwood gives his images a slow and precise cadence, and encloses his protagonists in frames full of expressiveness.

‘The dark knight’

The Dark Knight. USA, 2008 (152 minutes). Dir .: Christopher Nolan. Performers: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The murky face of the batman presides over Christopher Nolan’s second, feverish approach to the character. The dark knight he delves into his torments, although the film soon shows who turns out to be its true protagonist, a monumental Joker played by a superlative Heath Ledger, turned into the absolute master of a suffocating story, baroque, dense and colorful in equal measure. Nolan’s staging does the rest in an essential work in American cinema of this century.

24.00 / Hollywood

‘The werewolf’

The Wolfman. USA-UK, 2010 (125 minutes). Director: Joe Johnston. Cast: Benicio del Toro, Emily Blunt.

Joe Johnston’s attempt to resurrect the myth of the lycanthrope insists on the tragic overtones of the character, though he soon slides into the realms of melodrama. His story is drowned in the showiness of his special effects, although the effort to delve into the legendary components of the character is noticeable.
